The two key elements of the story of the Road to Emmaus are the two disciples “conversing” with Jesus and Jesus being made known to them in the breaking of the bread. The first window depicts the road in the background with the three conversing and the words: “Were not our hearts burning within us?”
The second window is a rustic scene of the three sitting on the floor, at table. Jesus is slightly illuminated and breaking a flat loaf of unleavened bread as the two disciples watch with their eyes opened.

In the Pentecost story and the first window, we encounter a crowd of diverse people, startled by the swirling wind and fire. But the Pentecost event sends those assembled in church out from the church doors as diverse Spirit-filled missionaries into the world in the second window. As Pope Francis teaches, we are to go out, beyond the sanctuary to bring the joy of the Gospel to all we meet. The second window captures this outward movement of today’s people from the open doors of the Church into the streets and includes the words of our parish mantra, “We are the Church”.
