In 1860, a small group of devoted Catholics formed a community of faith in Penfield and eventually built the original St. Joseph's Church — the little Church on the hill on Penfield Road at the corner of Liberty Street. Today, the original Church building is no longer there but the legacy of those who have gone before us remains in the sacred space of our holy burial grounds, St. Joseph's Cemetery.
As the Penfield community fo Catholics grew in the mid-20th century, so too the need for a larger worship site. As the current Church building on Gebhardt Road was under construction, St. Joseph's parishioners celebrated Holy Mass in what is now our Learning Center. in 1967, Bishop Sheen dedicated St. Joseph's Church.
The three iconic stained-glass windows over each entrance are cornerstones of the sacred art that graces St. Joseph's Church.
